Chocolate Spice Cake with Cinnamon Frosting

This cake kind of tastes like a gingerbread, but a million times better.

Chocolate Spice Cake with Chocolate Cinnamon Frosting


2 cup sugar

4 sticks unsalted butter, softened

4 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

2 cup buttermilk

2 tsp baking soda

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup cocoa, sifted

4 cups flour

1 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp allspice

1/2 tsp ground cloves

2 tsp cinnamon

for frosting—

4 sticks butter, room temperature

4.5-6 cups powdered sugar

4 oz semisweet chocolate, melted

pinch of sea salt

2 tsp cinnamon


Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour two nine inch cake pans. Set aside.

Cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one by one, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla and beat again.

Combine the sifted (important!) cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, baking soda and spices in a large bowl. Add dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk to the butter mixture, beating until well combined.

Pour batter into prepared cake pans and smooth top. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until edges begin to pull away from the sides of the pan. Let cool completely before frosting.


To make the icing, beat the butter, powdered sugar, cinnamon salt until fluffy. Drizzle in the melted chocolate while the mixer is going and continue to beat on high for another 6-8 minutes, until frosting is very light and fluffy. Smooth frosting over completely cooled cake.
